Book Trailer Project

Recently, I’ve been working on somewhat of an experiment. I did a book trailer for Heart of the Ronin once upon a time with my good friend Neil Witkin. It turned out beautifully, but this time I wanted to do something different, something unexpected a little askew for Rogues of the Black Fury. A couple of long trains of thought through Albequerque, Arkham Asylum, and Addis Ababa, ending up in Zanzibar by way of Ypsilanti, I arrived at the idea. After the idea, came the brainstorming, an enormous mind fart of dialogue appeared on the page. Then came the software. I gotta say, XtranormalContinue readingBook Trailer Project

To Be Free or Not Be Free: That is the Question

In 2008, I decided to become a podcaster. I had been listening to podcasts like I Should Be Writing, The Survival Guide to Writing Fantasy, Escape Pod, Pseudopod and others for a while, and appreciating this new form of entertainment. Audio books, customizable news feeds, a wide open world of creativity and content, and free, free, FREE! I was in heaven.

Great Review for “Snakes”!

I was reminded today of how powerful the written word can be–not just once, but twice. The first came when I heard of the passing of a writer who had changed my life–Ray Bradbury. Fahrenheit 451 remains a life-changing book for me, and I can say nothing at this point to do justice to his memory, except to say that his work changed me, inspired me, and shaped how I live my life. The second instance turned my day around. I have gotten good reviews before (and oh, yes, some bad ones, too.) Of course I enjoy the good ones,Continue readingGreat Review for “Snakes”!

Who Let the Rogues Out?

E-Reads did! It’s finally here! The Black Furies have just hit the streets in my new military fantasy novel from E-Reads, Rogues of the Black Fury. It’s available in trade paperback and all e-reader formats. If you’ve been paying attention, you know that I’ve been podcasting the novel, too. So you can sample it there to see if it’s your jug of dark ale. Here’s what some advance readers said: “Bold, colorful characters pull the reader into an unforgettable adventure with the perfect mix of suspense, intrigue, and action.” —Jeanne Cavelos, author of The Passing of the Techno-mages “Rogues ofContinue readingWho Let the Rogues Out?

Author Interview – Joe R. Lansdale

About four years ago, I launched this blog into an author interview project that included interviews with over sixty working authors at various stages of their careers. One of the things I learned from this project is just how many authors out there are darn fine, gracious people. I also learned a lot about how they do what they do, and if you’re a writer, go back through the archives, and you will too. The first author interview of this series was with Joe R. Lansdale. Before then, and up to now, he’s been one of my favorite writers. HisContinue readingAuthor Interview – Joe R. Lansdale

World Horror Convention Appearances

I’m delighted to report that I’ll be participating in two panels at the World Horror Convention next week in Salt Lake City. Writing for RPGs and Video Games – Saturday at 2:00 p.m. H.P. Lovecraft: the Short Stories – Sunday at 11:00 a.m. This will be my first trip to World Horror, so I’m really looking forward to it. It’s going to be a jam-packed four days. In addition to the panels, I am joining the mass autograph signing on Friday night at 8:00 p.m., and  I believe I’m also doing a reading at some point.

CINEQUEST Film Festival: Screenplay Success

About three hours after my blog post yesterday, at the CINEQUEST Film Festival Writers Celebration, the eight finalists in attendance were coming back to the theatre from lunch, and one of the assistants pulled me and Mozhan Marno, one of the other finalists, aside and took us back stage. Internally, I was about to explode with the sense of impending … something. The assistant was very circumspect, trying very hard not to release any cats from bags. Finally, Mozhan and I realized that apparently we were the FINAL finalists. The assistant said, “When we announce your name, come on stage.”Continue readingCINEQUEST Film Festival: Screenplay Success

CINEQUEST Film Festival

So this is the first blog post in a loooong time that hasn’t been a podcast episode or a reminder about some upcoming appearance. A job in academia tends to preclude a lot of basic writerly pursuits. I’m sitting right now at a Starbuck’s in San Jose, CA, across from the San Jose Repertory Theatre, where I’m awaiting the start of the CINEQUEST Film Festival Writers Celebration.  The screenplay I wrote with Jim Pinto, a horror-western called Death Wind, has made the Top 10 in the screenplay contest. This is not the first Top 10 or finalist status; DW gotContinue readingCINEQUEST Film Festival
