The World Burns

I attended my first ever Nebula Awards Conference this weekend, virtually, of course. What should have been a joyous occasion, sharing a weekend of camaraderie with science-fiction- and fantasy-writing colleagues, celebrating the nominees and winners of the best speculative fiction of the past year, was overshadowed by the ongoing horrors and injustices taking place all across U.S. soil. It cast a pall over every panel discussion, every conversation. We all felt it. We all talked about it. So, I feel like I would be remiss with you if I didn’t at least address the fact that we are living through anContinue readingThe World Burns

Launching a New Comic Series

I’m delighted to announce the roll-out of a new comic series Legend of the Ronin. It’s been a crazy fun ride thus far. I got the opportunity to work with one of my all-time favorite artists, Val Mayerik, who did the pencils and inks, and with the dazzling awesomeness of Brittany Pezzillo, who did the colors. Issue #0 is a special teaser. Issue #1 will be available in June, hopefully just in time for a debut at Denver Pop Culture Con, formerly known as Denver Comic Con. Sort of like the Artist Formerly Known as Prince. Anyway, this teaser isContinue readingLaunching a New Comic Series

The Hammer Falls – SF Action Novel

So many irons in the fire, so many things happening. Short stories coming out later this year, novels being written, screenplays in the works. The wheels are churnin’, the still is cookin’, the juices are flowin’. All that I’m learning how to play blues guitar, which has been a ton of fun. On the fiction front, I need your help with something very important. I have just launched a new Kickstarter to fund the publication of a new novel, The Hammer Falls. The Hammer Falls is a dystopian science-fiction action extravaganza. Imagine Gladiator meets The Wrestler and Sin City withContinue readingThe Hammer Falls – SF Action Novel

Great Review for “Snakes”!

I was reminded today of how powerful the written word can be–not just once, but twice. The first came when I heard of the passing of a writer who had changed my life–Ray Bradbury. Fahrenheit 451 remains a life-changing book for me, and I can say nothing at this point to do justice to his memory, except to say that his work changed me, inspired me, and shaped how I live my life. The second instance turned my day around. I have gotten good reviews before (and oh, yes, some bad ones, too.) Of course I enjoy the good ones,Continue readingGreat Review for “Snakes”!

Who Let the Rogues Out?

E-Reads did! It’s finally here! The Black Furies have just hit the streets in my new military fantasy novel from E-Reads, Rogues of the Black Fury. It’s available in trade paperback and all e-reader formats. If you’ve been paying attention, you know that I’ve been podcasting the novel, too. So you can sample it there to see if it’s your jug of dark ale. Here’s what some advance readers said: “Bold, colorful characters pull the reader into an unforgettable adventure with the perfect mix of suspense, intrigue, and action.” —Jeanne Cavelos, author of The Passing of the Techno-mages “Rogues ofContinue readingWho Let the Rogues Out?

Author Interview – Joe R. Lansdale

About four years ago, I launched this blog into an author interview project that included interviews with over sixty working authors at various stages of their careers. One of the things I learned from this project is just how many authors out there are darn fine, gracious people. I also learned a lot about how they do what they do, and if you’re a writer, go back through the archives, and you will too. The first author interview of this series was with Joe R. Lansdale. Before then, and up to now, he’s been one of my favorite writers. HisContinue readingAuthor Interview – Joe R. Lansdale

World Horror Convention Appearances

I’m delighted to report that I’ll be participating in two panels at the World Horror Convention next week in Salt Lake City. Writing for RPGs and Video Games – Saturday at 2:00 p.m. H.P. Lovecraft: the Short Stories – Sunday at 11:00 a.m. This will be my first trip to World Horror, so I’m really looking forward to it. It’s going to be a jam-packed four days. In addition to the panels, I am joining the mass autograph signing on Friday night at 8:00 p.m., and  I believe I’m also doing a reading at some point.

CINEQUEST Film Festival: Screenplay Success

About three hours after my blog post yesterday, at the CINEQUEST Film Festival Writers Celebration, the eight finalists in attendance were coming back to the theatre from lunch, and one of the assistants pulled me and Mozhan Marno, one of the other finalists, aside and took us back stage. Internally, I was about to explode with the sense of impending … something. The assistant was very circumspect, trying very hard not to release any cats from bags. Finally, Mozhan and I realized that apparently we were the FINAL finalists. The assistant said, “When we announce your name, come on stage.”Continue readingCINEQUEST Film Festival: Screenplay Success
